Best Golf Drivers 2018 – Buyer’s Guide

best golf drivers 2018Golf is a challenging game both mentally and physically. Everyone that plays has heard the expression “drive for show, putt for dough” at some point. While there is a lot of truth to that expression, if you can’t get the ball to the green in a reasonable number of shots then your putting won’t really matter.

On most golf courses you will use your driver to tee off on between 10 and 14 holes. Being able to control your tee shot sets you up for success on every one of those holes. Keeping the ball in play is a must for an enjoyable round of golf.

Whether you slice or fade off the tee modern golf club manufacturers have a club that can help you maintain control of the golf ball and keep it in play.

Many modern golf drivers give the golfer the ability to adjust the club head weighting and loft to better fit their unique swing.

We have analyzed many of the top golf drivers for 2018 (and some from past years that are still top performers!) and have compiled our opinions below for your enjoyment.

Let’s start with a quick table showing the golf drivers that we have reviewed and then we will go into more detail on each club.

Overall, this driver is very effective once you have adjusted it to fit your swing. It can easily add 10-20 yards to most shots versus other drivers.

Cleveland Golf Men’s Launcher HB Driver – EDITORS CHOICE

Key Specifications

Shaft MaterialGraphite
Available FlexRegular, Senior, Stiff
Club Head460cc
Loft AdjustmentsNot Adjustable

Cleveland Golf is back! The HB series is the first new clubs from Cleveland in quite a while and what a way to make a comeback. Average golfers will find the HB driver to be one of the easiest drivers to hit that they have ever tried.

Cleveland uses the HiBore crown to move the Center of Gravity lower and deeper than before which will give you a higher launch on your tee shot with lower ball spin. The higher launch angle is maximized by using a lightweight hosel to help keep the COG low.

The Launcher HB also uses Flex-Fin technology to compress and decompress the club face to give the ball explosive energy at impact. This also helps on heel and toe miss hits to keep your ball straighter and in the fairway.

The Launcher Cup Face increases the sweet spot on the driver so that you get more ball speed and better distance and control on every swing.

Bottom Line: This is our Editor’s Choice Winner for the average golfer. Better control, better ball speed, ball flight trajectory, all in one club.

TaylorMade Men’s AeroBurner 2016 Driver

Key Specifications

Orientation
Right
Shaft MaterialGraphite
Available FlexRegular, Senior, Stiff
Club Head460cc
Loft 9.5, 10.5, 12

This is a clone of the TaylorMade AeroBurner driver. It has all of the features of the TaylorMade but it appears to be from an OEM company. They really should make that clear in their product listing.

The manufacturer used thin face technology and a Speed Pocket to increase the size of the sweet spot so that you get maximum forgiveness on your off center hits and still get the best distance possible from your swing.

A head cover is included with the driver.

Bottom Line: This is a nice, low cost driver that will give good results but the OEM should be more precise with their product listing.

TaylorMade Men’s AeroBurner Driver

Key Specifications

Orientation

Shaft MaterialGraphite
Available FlexRegular, Senior, Stiff
Club Head460cc
Loft 9.5, 10.5, 12

This is the real TaylorMade AeroBurner Driver!

The AeroBurner has a 460cc club head and a Matrix Speed RUL-Z 50 graphite shaft.

TaylorMade uses a Speed Pocket to increase the size of the sweet spot making this driver very forgiving. They also use an AeroBurner graphic on the crown of the club head to help with shot alignment.

Most golfers will find this club helps keep their ball in play and may even bring back some distance that they have lost as they get older and don’t swing quite as hard as they used to,

Bottom Line: Another excellent driver from TaylorMade.

Callaway Mens XR 16 Driver

Key Specifications

Orientation

Shaft MaterialGraphite
Available FlexRegular, Senior, Stiff
Club Head460cc
Loft 9, 10.5, 13.5

The XR 16 is an excellent driver but it is typically only available in used condition. This is OK if you are looking for a low cost upgrade or replacement driver but you really don’t know what shape it will be in when you receive it.

If you are willing to take a chance on a used club then you will find this to be a really nice driver. It feels really comfortable when you swing it. The club produces a nice, balanced feel during the entire swing motion.

The club face can be adjusted to better fit your swing pattern so that is a nice feature. It is also a very forgiving club face on off center hits.

Bottom Line: A very nice used driver that can be obtained for a low cost. If you aren’t happy with your current driver and don’t want to break the bank on a new one then this is an excellent choice.

PGX Offset Golf Driver

PGX Offset Golf Driver

Key Specifications

Orientation
Right, Left
Shaft MaterialGraphite
Available FlexRegular
Club Head460cc
Loft 10.5

The PFX driver uses offset technology to help the golfer square up the ball at impact. This should result in more balls in the fairway and less time hunting in the woods for your ball.

With the 10.5 degree loft you can expect the ball to get in the air quickly but you will probably sacrifice some distance. A ball in play beats losing balls in the woods every time!

Because of the 460cc club head on the PGX offset driver you will find a very large sweet spot which gives the golfer maximum forgiveness on off center shots.

Bottom Line: If your swing naturally produces a slice then this driver will straighten your shot out for you.

Key Specifications

Orientation

Shaft MaterialGraphite
Available FlexRegular, Senior, Stiff, X-Stiff
Adjustable HoselYes
Loft 8.5, 9.5, 10.5, 12

This is definitely the most adjustable TaylorMade driver that we’ve tried so far.

The golfer can adjust the hosel to get the correct loft for their swing. You can also adjust the weights to make the ball travel higher and offer more forgiveness for those off center swings or make the ball travel at a lower trajectory or provide more roll once the ball hits the ground.

The Twist Face curvature of the club head makes for a larger sweet spot to give you more control on each shot.

Bottom Line: One of the best drivers we’ve tested but a bit pricey. If price isn’t a concern then this is the driver that we would recommend to our friends and family.

2017 Cobra Golf Men’s KING F7 Driver With Cobra Connect

Cobra 2017 King F7 Driver

Key Specifications

Orientation
Right, Left
Shaft MaterialGraphite
Available FlexRegular, Senior, Stiff, X-Stiff
Club HeadCarbon Fiber
Adjustable Loft 9 - 12 degree range

This truly is an amazing driver. It is very easy to adjust to allow you to get the maximum distance and control on your tee shots.

You can adjust the ball trajectory so that your swing doesn’t have you hitting pop flies or low line drives. Unless, of course, that is what you want to do. The MyFly8 with SmartPad lets you quickly adjust the club so you can fine tune each shot if you so desire.

The Center of Gravity can be adjusted to front, back and heel positions so that you can get optimum distance and control on every shot.

The club head has a carbon fiber crown to make the club lighter and a Titanium face that is lighter and thinner so that you can create faster ball speeds on your shot. It also has a larger sweet spot to help keep your ball in the fairway.

Bottom Line: Not as expensive as some other drivers but it is a full featured driver that is easily user customizable.

Cobra Men’s KING F6+ Driver

Cobra King F6+

Key Specifications

Orientation

Shaft MaterialGraphite
Available FlexRegular, Stiff, X-Stiff
Club HeadTitanium face, Carbon Fiber Crown
Adjustable Loft 9 - 12 degree range

From the minute you pick up this club you will not want to put it down. Take it to the driving range and you will feel like a pro as you watch every shot go right down the middle.

It is a well balanced club that just feels right when you swing it. The lightweight of the club is due in part to the Titanium club face and the carbon fiver crown of the club head. These combine to give the club a very low center of gravity which contributes to longer, straighter drives every time.

The ability to adjust the loft and the center of gravity means that this club can be tuned to fit almost any golfers swing to provide maximum distance and control.

Bottom Line: This driver can be hard to find since it is an older model but it is well worth it if you do find one.

Callaway uses a Titanium exo-cage club head with a carbon crown and sole to keep the club lightweight yet still provide ball and trajectory control along with maximum forgiveness.

This club was designed with aerospace exports to improve club aerodynamics so that you can achieve maximum club speed throughout your swing so that you can generate the best ball speed at impact.

The Big Bertha Fusion does require the use of a special adjusting tool but it is included with the club.

Bottom Line: Fantastic driver but you will most likely have to buy used at this point.

As I said earlier, there are a lot of choices for drivers these days. You can spend a little or you can spend a lot. You can buy a basic driver or you can get a “connected” driver that will track your distance and accuracy automatically.
